In early November, we had a visit from grandma and were on the road for many days to explore the Kvemo Kartli region more closely. Places and routes that are far off the usual tourist paths are always full of surprises. Local families told us that a Swiss(!) entrepreneur had chosen this region during Soviet times to produce cheese on a large scale according to original Swiss recipes. Although this project did not survive the collapse of the Soviet Union, cheese is still produced here in abundance. We are happy to organize a tasting for our future guests.

Kvemo Kartli is located southwest of Tbilisi at the foothills of the Lesser Caucasus and offers beautiful hiking routes following the traces of ruins and decayed cities that were once inhabited by the nobility of Georgia. A particularly spectacular route, which could come straight out of a “Lord of the Rings” movie, leads well hidden through forest and between rugged rocks, through several stone gates, to an apparently impregnable fortress high in the mountains. You can find photos of it at the very bottom.

Warm regards from Georgia, we look forward to showing many of you the most beautiful places in the Caucasus next year.

Cheese, cheese, cheese everywhere

Nona and her mother Svetlana showed us their small cheese factory with great enthusiasm. Their products are delicious, so it’s not surprising that most of the cheese is sold directly to restaurants in Tbilisi. Nona is also involved in the tourism development of her region and is definitely looking forward to future visitors who come by in the UAZ bus.

Explore Tbilisi

Often our guests add a few more days in the capital of Georgia. Although we are not specialists in city tours, we are happy to pass on one or two good tips.
PS: Tiflis is the old designation, which, for whatever reason, has been retained in German. However, we mostly use the internationally common “Tbilisi”. By the way, this is also what the city is called in Georgian.

Entry & visa

Georgia is easy to reach from Europe with a flight to the capital Tbilisi or to Kutaisi, no visa is required.

Dagestan  (airport “MCX”) is best reached with the airline Pobeda almost daily from Istanbul.
For to 16 days you can get Russia tourist visas online, longer Russia visas you apply for in your home country.
Transit visas for Russia (e.g., if you are travelling on to Kazakhstan) are available in Tbilisi and Yerevan.
