Safari in Georgia? Yes, that’s for real! Specifically in Vashlovani National Park, which is nestled in the far east, close to the border with Azerbaijan, almost at sea level. Leopards were spotted in the vast savanna landscapes here as recently as 2009. Gazelles are now grazing in the area again, and perhaps one day, the big cats will return as well. In any case, this region is a paradise for lovers of wild and more remote trails, and it’s an ideal place to drive our 4×4 campers off-road, away from all roads.

The entire Vashlovani lowland is composed of sandy clay, and the force of water has created bizarre terrain formations here over the centuries. It’s a popular nesting place for various bird species, and turtles seem to enjoy it here as well.

One important note: this area may not be safe to drive in rain.
We will, of course, handle the necessary border permits for you to travel in this region.

Best regards,

Andreas and Svetlana

Lost military airport from Soviet times

The “Big Shiraki” Airport was built around the 1950s and has been abandoned since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Now, the wheels of time are taking their toll on the sprawling facilities. The children were particularly delighted with a hangar that was filled with straw. For once, we didn’t sleep in the UAZ that night 😉

Oily mud volcanoes

As a former petroleum engineer, Andreas is naturally thrilled when the black gold rises to the surface. The mud volcanoes here on the border with Azerbaijan mainly rise mud to the surface with only traces of oil. Nevertheless, some of the bubbling cones are covered with a viscous layer of tar.

Travel and Visa

For visiting Georgia a direct flight to Tbilisi is the quickest route, most citizens don’t need a Visa.
